Magnificent Century: Turkish Movie Industry comes of age

August 2, 2013 by admin

Millions in Turkey, Russia, Eastern Europe and the Middle East are talking about what will happen to Hurrem Sultan, Sultan Suleiman’s wife, when the next season of TV series Magnificent Century (Muhtesem Yuzyil) opens next fall. Timur Savci, producer of the series, has achieved what most North American producers can only dream of, hook an audience of millions at home and abroad that just can’t wait to see the next episode. Magnificent Century is a magnificent historical soap opera depicting the court, and the harem, of Sultan Suleiman The Magnificent who turned the Ottoman Empire into a European superpower at the turn of the 16th century. With its superb cast of actors, posh costumes, realistic setting and excellent cinematography the low-budget soap gives the impression of a high-budget  historical suspense-romance-action epic. Pivotal to the series’ success has been Meryem Uzerli, a novice Turkish German actress that had been playing Suleiman’s Ukrainian concubine Alexandra/Hurrem Sultan who rose to become the first wedded wife of an Ottoman ruler and the most powerful woman in the Empire’s history. After Savci had a falling out with Uzerli and hired another actress for the role the speculation is whether this will mark the beginning of the end for Magnificent Century. With her skillful rendition of childish innocence, compassion, undying love for her man and a power-driven mind capable of evil the beautiful Uzerli seems a natural for the character that the audience has come to love and hate.

With a television set in almost every urban household and the proliferation of TV channels Turkish movie industry has come a long way since the days when Turkish movies were a laughing stock. If you have the time there’s no shortage of high-quality TV political thrillers, drama and romantic comedies with millions of addicts most of whom live outside Turkey. In spite of its extravagant appearance Magnificent Century is a low-budget production by North American standards where battle scenes and outdoors action have been kept short but compensated by court intrigue suspense in every 2-hour commercial-free episode. Adaptation of this and other Turkish TV movies for North American audiences may be a business opportunity, and investors may want to take a look at Turkey for higher returns and lower risk on the motion picture dollar.

Some Quick Facts About Turkish

Contrary to popular belief, Turkish language has no relation to Arabic although a big part of the vocabulary has Arabic and Persian words or derivatives. The language was written in Arabic script until Ataturk adopted the Latin alphabet. Modern Turkish alphabet is pretty much the same as the English alphabet except that it has no x or w, and some letters are similar to the German umlaut. Like German Turkish is a phonetic language, meaning that once you've mastered the sounds of the alphabet, you'll know how to pronounce Turkish. English speakers have difficulty learning some of the letters, though, like the French "eu" and the German umlaut "u."
